Boxing workout is a young person’s sport. Or so most of us believe. After all, this is a sport that requires a lot of physical strength and stamina. It takes years of training to be able to move with purpose, to be light on your feet.  In reality, you can learn boxing at any age, young or old.  Boxing improves hand eye coordination, mental acuity and is a great form of physical exercise.

In fact, you’ll often hear experts state that one should start learning to box at the tender age of 12 or 13. Of course, there are some who started way later and still made a professional career out of it. We’re talking about Deontay Wilder who made his boxing debut at 23 years old and was WBC heavyweight champion for 5 years straight. But they say he’s an anomaly rather than the norm.

All of that being said, you shouldn’t feel as if you’re too old to learn boxing workout over 50. Whether you’re in your 30s or all the way to your 60s (or even higher), you still have what it takes to be a boxer. You may not become a heavyweight champ in your lifetime, but you’ll reap so many physical and emotional benefits of boxing that taking up your gloves will be well worth the work. Don’t believe us? Below are reasons why you’re always at the right age to learn boxing.


1. Boxing Workout is an excellent full-body workout for Men Over 50

Boxing is a fast moving exercise over 50 that require you to engage various muscles at the same time. When you punch, you use the muscles in your arm. But you also engage the muscles in your shoulder, lower back, and even your core to power your punch.

A home boxing workout plan consists of a variety of exercises including jump rope, sit ups, pushups, pull ups, and even circuit training.

That’s not all. Because you’re getting a full-body workout, you’re doing wonders for your health. Engaging all of those muscles pushes your heart to pump more blood and oxygen, so the muscles are able to work harder. Of course, your lungs also get a bit of exercise. In short, boxing can help improve your cardiovascular health.

As we grow older, it’s important that our heart and lungs stay strong. We become more susceptible to certain illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, etc. If we want to be able to enjoy all that life has to offer as we age, we need to stay fit and active. Boxing can give you all of that.


2. You can do it at your own pace

Unless you are planning on competing professionally, there’s no reason why you need to rush your boxing workout. The basics of boxing exercise after age 50 are pretty easy to learn. You’ll be able to pick up the different punches and combinations just by jabbing at the punching bags in your local gym. However, learning the footwork, as well as, building up your strength and stamina will take time.

But that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to train with others who are on a different level. In fact, the opposite is true. It’s quite common for those who are more advanced in the sport of boxing help train those who are still beginning. You don’t need to push yourself too hard to keep up with the other boxers in the gym. You can go at your own pace and still get the best workout of your life.

For men who are older or have physical ailments such hip or back injuries or Parkinson’s Disease, can do seated boxing exercises, or a home boxing workout which gives you the heart health benefits, without the risk of falling.

3. It’s never too late to learn self-defense

Self-defense is a skill that needs to be learned by everyone, at any age. Knowing how to physically defend yourself from an attack is essential these days. Not only does a boxing workout allow you to handle physical confrontations without getting beat up on, you also gain the strength and speed it would take to fight off an attack AND run away before things get worse.

In addition, boxing helps teach you how to keep calm and focused, to make lightning-fast decisions during high-pressure situations. It’ll help you keep your head in the heat of the moment, instead of paralyzed by fear. Moreover, boxing can help you defend others, not just yourself.

4. Boxing Workout After 50 provides you with an enjoyable workout

Getting on a treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bikes are all great workouts. But they can become quite boring at some point. Knowing that you’ll be doing the same old routine isn’t exactly something that would motivate you to get up in the morning.  A boxing workout, however, is a whole other matter.

This sport requires you to train in a variety of ways. It’s not just a bunch of punching sessions, whether it’s a double-ended bag  or a speed bag.

As we’ve mentioned, you’ll need to do some circuit training, weight training, jump rope, and a lot of different exercises. Moreover, you need to continually learn new techniques and spar with different boxers. There’s nothing “routine” about this sport.

5. Boxing Exercise will boost your self-esteem

We all feel good about ourselves whenever we look good. So, it’s not really anything revolutionary to say that boxing will help you feel good because you’ll end up being in the best shape of your life. However, it’s not just about how fit you’ll be that will help you feel more confident in yourself. As we’ve mentioned earlier, boxing will enable you to learn how to defend yourself and others. This knowledge, that you can rely on your own skills when you’re attacked, can boost anyone’s self-esteem.

That’s not all. Boxing workout is a social sport. You’ll be training with others, sparring with them, sharing tips and techniques. Boxers also love motivating each other, pushing fellow boxers to go beyond their limits. When you have that camaraderie with others, it’s hard to feel lonely and depressed. Being part of a circle of like-minded people can make you feel good about who you are as a person, a friend, and an athlete.
