How Much Weight Can You Lose?
Thousands of men and women who have used this popular low carb diet, report they lost anywhere from 10 to nearly 30 pounds during the first 30 days. Weight loss is generally most dramatic during phase 1, the protein-only phase. During phases 2 to 4, weight loss continues, but at a slower and healthy pace. With more delicious, healthy and nutritious high protein low carb recipes, you slowly begin to re-enter fruits, vegetables, low carbs and healthy grains into your diet, so the weight loss is not so dramatic it becomes unhealthy. At phase 4, you learn how to maintain the weight loss, while living a normal life and eating the foods you love, just in a healthier way.
Is the Dukan Diet Safe for Kids?
Dr. Dukan discusses how to use this diet for adolescent and post adolescent kids. While he discusses the use of the diet for pre and menopausal adolescent girls, he did not discuss, in great detail, the use of the Dukan Diet for children suffering from weight gain and obesity. Before starting any diet or exercise program, have your children see their pediatrician to ensure they are healthy enough to start a diet or exercise program, especially if the child is overweight, obese or has Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. Dr. Dukan recommends on pages 130-31 of the Dukan Diet, that adolescent children up to age 18 start with the Consolidation Phase and Protein Thursday to get their weight under control and then move to Phase 4 – Permanent Stabilization phase. This is important while their young bodies are still growing and going through hormonal changes.
After the age of 18, if the girl or boy is overweight or menopausal, Dr. Dukan recommends using a modified form of the Dukan Diet, as follows:
• 3-5 days of Attack Phase
• Transition to Cruise Phase
• Alternate 1 day of pure protein and another day of pure protein and vegetables
How Does The Dukan Diet Compare to the Atkins Diet?
1). While there are several similarities between The Dukan Diet and Atkins Diet, which are two popular high protein low carb diets, there are several notable differences as well. The graph below indicates many of the notable differences.
Source: Dukan Diet
2). If you choose the Atkins Diet, you are choosing a life-long diet and eating program to maintain your weight and health. If you choose The Dukan Diet, the high protein recipe portion is comprised of a four-phase weight loss program that you stay on until you have either lost your desired amount of weight, or reached the target weight for your height, age and body type. Once you have finished phase 4 and have reached your target weight goal; you can once again eat all of your favorite foods 6 days a week, and one day a week you eat foods specified in the plan.
3). The Dukan Diet does not allow for the consumption of fat and unhealthy carbohydrates during Phase 1, and actually demonizes the Atkins Diet for allowing dieters to eat large sums of fat and carbohydrates. Dr. Pierre Dukan says eating large sums of carbs and fat prevents people from losing weight, and potentially gaining more. Once you complete Phase 4, you can again eat fats and carbohydrates in moderate quantities, as long as you follow the program strictly one day out of the week.
4). With this high protein low carb diet, you eat real food that you enjoy by following their simple and delicious recipes, while on the Atkins Diet you are required to eat their portion-controlled packaged foods and snack bars.
5). With the Atkins Diet, you must count carbs and calories, yet with The Dukan Diet you can enjoy unlimited quantities of the 100 proteins and vegetables allowed until you feel satisfied.
6). You eat a small amount of oat bran everyday, which helps you feel fuller so you don’t eat as much food during the day, and helps promote weight loss.

What Does Dr. Oz Say?
To learn more about The Dukan Diet, Dr. Oz interviewed Dr. Pierre Dukan to learn more about his low carb high protein diet that took France by storm in 2000, and has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Dr. Oz even convened a panel of three leading nutritionists on his Dr. Oz Show to discuss the weight loss benefits and potential health risks of The Dukan Diet. Dr. Oz agrees the high protein diet is good for overweight people, since the rapid weight loss experienced in Phase 1 can be a great motivator to help people stay on the diet, but made it clear this is not a long-term diet option, like the Atkins Diet.
You should not stay on Phase 1 for a significant amount of time, since a protein only diet is not healthy in the long-term, but can be very effective in the short-term. He was initially quite skeptical of quick weight loss diets, like The Dukan Diet, until he spoke with Dr. Dukan and became a fan of this popular high protein low carb diet, and agreed best weight loss programs are ones that offer quick weight loss at the beginning, and keep you motivated and eating a healthy diet until you lose the amount of weight to reach your target weight.
You can see the interview with Dr. Dukan here. As with any diet or exercise program, see your doctor before starting any program, especially if you are overweight.

Out of the 667 reviews I read, 80 gave the Dukan Diet 1 star out of 5. Many of the complaints stated that having to give up carbohydrates completely during phase 1 was unsatisfying, boring or hard to do. It is unfortunately, excess consumption of carbohydrates, in the form of refined sugars, processed foods, etc that lead to weight gain jn the first place. The good news, is that once Phase 1 is over, it gets easier as you can re-enter the foods you like, but in a healthier way that will allow to lose and maintain your weight loss.
