What is the Great Shakeout?

Every year school kids and residents on the west coast of the United States and Canada practice emergency drills around 10 am PST called the Great Shakeout, which is an earthquake preparedness drill.  California is called “earthquake country,” and the Great Shakeout is a drill that school kids in California to British Columbia, Canada participate in to help kids prepare and know what to do in case of an earthquake.

Earthquake Drill

During the Great Shakeout, school kids will practice the duck and cover drill by hiding under their desks when the alarm sounds, to simulate what to do in case of a real earthquake.  Some teachers and students will simulate being injured so the school officials can practice to make sure they are prepared when  a large earthquake hits, and teachers or students may be injured.

While schools practice earthquake drills, do families have an emergency preparedness drill, as an earthquake may hit while you are sleeping or otherwise at home.

What is an Emergency Survival Kit

While school kids practice these drills, sadly many families are not prepared for an earthquake or any other type of emergency or natural disaster.  Emergency officials recommend that every family has an emergency survival kit, with food, water and supplies to last for three days.  You should also keep a small emergency preparedness kit with water, bandages, flashlight, radio, and a few energy bars in your car, in case you are trapped and it may be hours or a few days before you can be rescued.

What is Needed in an Emergency Survival Kit

You can buy an emergency survival kit, or you can make your own survival kit.

Make sure your home emergency survival kit has the following supplies for four people to last for three days:

Red Duffel bag to hold emergency supplies

Bandages

Blankets

Sterile pads to clean wounds

Water with five year shelf life

Energy Bars

Canned food

Flashlights

Radios

Fresh batteries

Why You Need an Emergency Survival Kit?

While it has been several years since the last major earthquake in California, a major earthquake will hit again…it’s not a question of will we have a major earthquake, but when will we have the next major earthquake.

I have been through a major earthquake in California, and our local grocery store sustained severe damage.  This resulted in rationed supplies of water, food items and other emergency supplies being sold to customers.  You want to have enough supplies on hand to stay put in your house in case your area sustains major structural damage, road damage or closures, downed power lines, and no water or electricity for several hours or up to 4 days.

Where You Can Buy an Emergency Preparedness Kit
