How to Treat Peyronie’s Disease

I have read questions on several forums from men seeking advise about a condition in which their penis is crooked or bent upward or downward when erect, but straight when not erect.  Men with the condition usually ask how to straighten your penis when affected with Peyronie’s Disease.  I decided it was time to help answer the question for men concerned about how to treat their crooked penis.

What is Peyronie’s Disease

A bent or crooked erect penis is due to a condition called Pyronie’s Disease, named after an 18th century French surgeon Fancois Gigot de La Peyronie, who discovered this condition.  Click here to see medical  pictures of Pyronie’s Disease.  This non-life threatening condition is caused by scar tissue, called plaque or bumps, that form along the length of the penis in the corpora cavernosa, which are the two sponge-like chambers that fill with blood to help a man achieve and maintain an erection.  This condition can develop over time or appear suddenly, due to the level of trauma.

How do you Get Peyronie’s Disease?

Doctors are not sure of the cause of Peyronie’s Disease, but they believe it is due to some sort of injury to the penis that causes internal bleeding.  The National Institutes of Health estimates this disease effects around 1% of all men, and effects mosly middle aged men.  The healing of the damaged Corpora Cavernosa tissue causes scar tissue or bumps, called plaque to form that results in the penis bending upward when erect.  There is no sign of the condition when the penis is non-erect or flaccid.

Effects of Peyronie’s Disease

The effects of Peyronie’s Disease can range from mild to severe.  In most cases, Peyronie’s Disease does not significantly impact a man’s ability to get an erection or engage in sexual intercourse.  The pain associated with this disease will usually decrease or disappear over time, yet the curved penis may remain.  These men are considered to have a mild case of this sexual dysfunction disease.

Studies have shown that in approximately 5% – 19% of cases, the disease will correct itself over time.

Men with moderate Peyronie’s Disease are able to achieve an erection, but may feel some pain and discomfort where the plaques have formed in the Corpora Cavernosa, or may feel pain during sexual intercourse, due to the curvature of the penis.

In rare cases, the disease causes significant disability in a man to achieve an erection suitable for sexual intercourse, called erectile dysfunction, or the curviture of the erect penis and severe discomfort prevents a man from engaging in sexual intercourse.

Treatment for Peyronie’s Disease

Treatment options for patients with Peyonie’s Disease can vary including:

  • No treatment required
  • Medication to soften the hardened plaque in the shaft of the penis, such as Vitamin E
  • Surgery to remove plaque from the corpora cavernosa
  • Prosthetic implant to straighten the penis

Many doctors today recommend waiting anywhere from one year to two years to see if the condition corrects itself.  In most cases, Peyronie’s will correct itself fully or the symptoms will subside enough that no formal treatment is required within this time period.  For men who prefer a natural remedy for Peyronie’s Disease, there are several good Books for Peyronie’s Disease that offer doctor recommended natural treatments for curved penis.

If a man has mild penis curvature and is able to achieve an erection and can successfully participate in sexual intercourse, most doctors will recommend no formal treatment for the disease.

If Peyronie’s Disease develops rapidly, a biopsy of the tissue can be performed to help ascertain the cause of the condition.

For moderate Peyronie’s Disease, treatments can include oral medication, topical cream, electrical therapy, ultrasound therapy, manual penis extender and locally injectable steroid agents into the effected area to help break up the plaque.

In severe case of Peyronie’s Disease, treatment options can include surgery to remove the plaque or shortening the unaffected side of the penis (plication).  This can lead to a shortening of the length of the penis, which many men may find unacceptable.  In some cases, men can use a device to manually straighten a curved penis in the privacy of their home, or a surgeon can medically insert a penile prosthesis may be used to help maintain a straight penis during erection.  While these surgical options can improve the curvature of the penis, a potential side effect is loss of some feeling, slightly less stiffness during erection or erectile dysfunction.
