It has been proven that hypothyroidism can sometimes lead to infertility in men.  Thyroid problems have also been linked to other male reproductive disorders, such as low testosterone, low sperm count and erectile dysfunction.   Unfortunately, it can be easily overlooked in the considerations of the reason behind the incidence of male infertility problems.

Fortunately, this can be remedied as a simple blood test can determine the absence of either thyroxine or triiodothyronine (T4 and T3 respectively) in the body.  What is hypothyroidism?  In simple terms, it means that the thyroid gland located just below the “Adam’s apple” is deficient in its production of the hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine.  This does not necessarily mean that it has stopped functioning, rather it could mean that there is insufficient production of these hormones to be properly utilized by the body to carry out its vital functions Hypothyroidism is a more common fertility condition among women than in men, which is why it can easily be overlooked as a cause for male fertility issues.

If the Hypothyroidism is mild, the tests will only show that the level of thyroid hormones produced is low compared to its normal quantity.  But when severe, tests may show no production of thyroxine or triiodothyronine.  So, how does someone know if they have hypothyroidism?  It is not very easy to spot or deduce a thyroid condition, as there are many symptoms that are attributed to it which are also commonly found among other ailments.  Some of these symptoms are excessive weight gain, general weakness or fatigue, insomnia, increased heart rate, depression, erectile dysfunction and extreme mood swings just to mention a few.  So you can see from the above that these symptoms are also commonly associated with other ailments.

When working with your doctor to determine the cause of your infertility or erectile dysfunction, ensure that your thyroid is checked to see if this is the cause of your male sexual dysfunction or infertility.
