Seven Causes of Erectile Dysfunction, and How to Cure It!

I have been seeing  the same question lately on several forums – what is the cause of male impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction.

The potential symptoms of erectile dysfunction fall into two categories – medical and mental.

Before we address the causes of erectile dysfunction, we must first understand what is erectile dysfunction.  A penis becomes erect when a male become aroused sexually, which triggers the brain to send blood flowing into the three chambers of the penis, which cause it to become sufficiently erect and hard for vaginal penetration.  Sexual dysfunction occurs when an insufficient amount of blood enters the chambers of the penis,  thus resulting in a soft erection insufficient for intercourse, no erection at all or an inability to maintain an erection suitable for sex.

Now that we have explained what ED is, the harder part is determining what is causing it so that a treatment for impotence can be determined.

Please note, I am not a medical doctor and the information should not be taken as medical diagnosis or cure.  You should consult your medical doctor for a complete physical exam to determine the cause of your erectile dysfunction and to discuss the treatment options.

What are the medical causes  of erectile dysfunction?

1) Heart Disease.  Heart Disease can cause cardiovascular disease, which impacts the flow of blood to your heart and can slow the flow of blood through your body.  Constriction of blood flow can cause ED, due the lack of blood flowing to the penis, sufficient to achieve an erection.

2) Diabetes.  To achieve an erection, men need strong blood vessels, nerves, male hormones, and ability to be sexually stimulated. Diabetes can damage the blood vessels and nerves that allow an erection to occur.  Males with Diabetics can have normal amounts of male hormones and the desire to have sex, but still may not be able to achieve a firm erection if the blood vessels and nerves have been wracked by years of diabetes.  Up to 70% of males will have ED at some point in their lives. 1

3) Low Testosterone.  A male with low levels of testosterone, can feel listless, tired, exhausted, and may likely lack the desire to have sex.  If there is no desire to have sex, the brain will not send a signal that sexual arousal is achieved and send blood to the penis to become erect.

4) Thyroid condition.  The thyroid, which is located in the neck, is an organ with multi-functions.  One of the functions of the thyroid is it regulates the production if sexual hormones in the body.  An insufficient level of sexual hormones in the body can cause erectile dysfunction.

Through a complete physical, your doctor can confirm or rule out if you have any of the conditions in your body, and if they are a contributing factor if you have ED.  If you do not have erectile dysfunction, but have one of these conditions, you are an excellent candidate to get erectile dysfunction.

If your doctor rules out you do not have any of the above medical conditions or any other medical condition that can cause male impotence, it is possible the cause of your male sexual dysfunction is mental in nature.

What are the mental issues that can cause erectile dysfunction

5) Stress.  Stress is linked to many medical and mental conditions in the human body.  Since an erection first starts with sexual desire or intimacy, which than sends a message to your brain to send blood to your sexual organ, stress can negatively impact libido thus preventing the signal from the brain to the reproductive system.  Stress is one of the most common psychological issues which leads to erectile dysfunction.

6) Anxiety.  Anxiety is linked to many medical and mental conditions in the human body.  Since an erection first starts with sexual desire or intimacy, which than sends a message to your brain to send blood to your sexual organ, anxiety can cause performance fear or worry that can cause a loss in libido, thus preventing the signal from the brain to the reproductive system.  Anxiety can impact other parts of your body, which can also result in ED.

7) Depression.  Depression is linked to many medical and mental conditions in the human body.  Since an erection first starts with sexual desire or intimacy, which than sends a message to your brain to send blood to your sexual organ, depression can cause a lack of desire for sex.  If you are taking an anti-depressant, one of the side effects can be erectile dysfunction.  Depression can impact other parts of your body, which can also result in ED.
