Insanity Workout

Insanity Workout Reviews

I have been using the Insanity Workout home exercise program, and this is my review of the popular home workout program developed by fitness trainer and choreographer, Shaun T.  In addition to Insanity Workout, I have done other home exercise programs, including using a recumbent exercise bike, weight training, circuit training, aerobics, and Zumba Fitness.  I would rate the Insanity Workout as the hardest and most intense workout I have ever done.  Within a few weeks of doing the Insanity Workout on a regular basis  I have already seen changes in my body.  My wife says my stomach is flatter, my face is a bit thinner and I have more energy.  After reading my Insanity Workout Review, you will know if this is the home exercise program for you.

What is the Insanity Workout?

The Insanity Workout is an intense home exercise program that is designed to take inches off your waist and tone your major core muscle muscle groups, including arms, legs, waist, abs and chest.  Based on the science of plyometrics, the Insanity Workout DVD program is a 10 DVD 60-day home fitness program that is designed to build strength and power by isolating different muscle groups with each DVD.  Each Insanity Workout DVD lasts approximately 30-45 minutes and follows a plyometric training format in which you do a set of three to five exercises, take a short 30 second break, then repeat the set of exercises again.  Shaun T. has several people on the videos doing the exercises in a fitness class setting, so you feel like you are in the class with him and his team.  He walks you through each exercise before starting, and then using the people in his class, demonstrates proper technique, posture and speed so you know you are doing the exercises properly to get maximum benefit.

One important feature of this home workout video is that you can easily follow the total time of the workout video, the elapsed time for each exercise, and time remaining which is clearly and easily displayed in a large yellow banner along the bottom of the video.  This is important if your doctor recommends no more than a specific amount of exercise time per day, or you want to track your daily workouts.  I recently watched a kick boxing exercise video, in which not only was no time displayed, but the exercise instructor would ask how much time had elapsed.  It was not only totally annoying, but very unprofessional for a fitness instructor to not keep proper time for the exercise.  You will never have this issue with the Insanity Workout.

Who is Shaun T.?

So, you may be asking,  Who is Shaun T.  (Shaun Thompson),  the creator of the Insanity Workout Program, available on Amazon.com and why is he uniquely qualified to lead you through these intense plyometic exercises?  When you go to the store and look at the endless number of home exercise videos for sale, how many of the people selling these videos do you know?  What are their qualifications to lead you through an exercise workout?  Many home workout videos have actually been shown to be ineffective or even dangerous.    You can check out all the Shaun T. home exercise programs here.

Shaun T. grew up in New Jersey playing several sports including football, baseball and running track.   Track remains his most popular sport.  Shaun T. attended Rowan University, where he received his BS in Sports Science and minored in Theater/Dance.  After he gained 50 lbs in his freshman year in college, Shaun changed his degree and focused on fitness.   As part of his college education in sport fitness, he was required to teach an aerobics class.  Shaun Thompson’s fitness career after college began as a health and fitness specialist/personal trainer and health program manager at Wyeth Labs, a multi-national pharmaceutical company.  Later, he worked at a number of fitness chains, including Equinox Fitness. Shaun began dancing in college, and after graduating from Rowan University, he moved to Los Angeles to work as a choreographer, dancer and trainer.  His first professional work as a dancer was for Mariah Carey. While Thompson was teaching a popular fitness class at Equinox Fitness, he was approached by representatives of Beachbody, LLC. the multimillion dollar fitness company based in Santa Monica, CA,  and was asked to submit a demo for a workout video.[5] This lead to a series of home exercise videos, including the Insanity Workout.

Do You Need Exercise Equipment or Weights?

No, you do not need any exercise equipment or weights to participate in the Insanity Workout home exercise program.  You just need will, determination and a drive to dig deep.

What are Plyometics?

Plyometric exercises are high intensity exercises designed to build strength and power, while developing lean muscle mass.  Plyometrics were developed for Olympic athletes and contain two phases – a muscle lengthening phase and a stretch phase.  This is why you will notice Shaun T. does explosive plyometic exercises in his Insanity Workout Program for a few minutes, then takes a water break and a muscle stretching phase, then another round of explosive muscle workouts.  The plyometic exercises were developed for Russian Olympic athletes in the 60’s and 70’s, and the name plyometrics was coined in the 80’s by Fred Witt, a former US Olympic sprinter.

What if I am new to a home workout program?  Is the Insanity Workout OK?

If you are new to exercise,  have not done intense exercises, or have heart issues or diabetes issues it is recommended you get a physical exam before beginning an intense home exercise program, like the Insanity Workout to make sure you can handle this type of extreme exercise workout.  Shaun T. and his team work out in an intense high energy level for 30-45 minutes.  If you are new to exercise or to high intensity exercise, Shaun T. recommends beginning at your own level with the Insanity Workout videos and slowly work up to the high intensity you see Shaun T. doing.  Take frequent breaks as needed.

Some Insanity Workout Reviews seem to distract people who have never done an extreme workout from doing the Insanity Workout.  I would say start out slowly and at your own level, even just 10 minutes per day, then work up to the intensity of the video.  It was pretty intense when I first did it, and could barely keep up.  I take frequent water breaks, and have worked up doing the entire video.

The key to being successful is not to get distracted or discouraged.  Focus on your goal, do the exercises and once you start to see improvement this will be your motivation to keep doing it.  Plyometrics was developed for Olympic athletes to build strength and explosive power in a short period of time.  Shaun T, the developer of the Insanity Workout Program available on Amazon, says if you commit to doing the Insanity Workout DVD for 60 days, you are guaranteed to lose inches, while you build noticeable muscle mass and definition, strength and power.  If you are out of shape, need to workout at a slower pace, due to health issues, it may just take a little longer to get the results, but you will get there.

To see if the Insanity Workout Program is right for you, you can check out Shaun T. on the Dr. Oz Show here, to try a 15 minute workout he did with Dr. Oz.  I will admit, when I don’t have time to do the full 45 minute workout, I have this link saved on my computer to do a short 15 minute workout to help stay on track with my Insanity workout routine.
